FEBRUARY NOTES

SPJ Board Meeting Minutes

President Camilla Forte called the meeting to order at 1:40. 

Goals:

• Treasurer Ignacio Calderon leaving- need to find a replacement

  • To be considered active board member

  • Might still need to do some duties 

• National Application- need to determine what is going on

Attendance:

Camilla Forte, President

Julia Greene, Vice President

Mari Devereaux, Secretary

National Application

• Need to confirm people who have registered with national group

• Description of petitioning group

• Need some info about them (year, major, etc.)

• Need to actually turn in, pretty much done

• Finish by end of February (latest)

Next six month plan 

• Assess schedules, find new time to have meetings

• Wednesday/Thursday afternoon ? Tentative

• Give a few options on an instagram poll

2020 schedule 

• • AP Stylebook and chill (talk about editing, new additions like race/gender/etc, workshop pieces, story feedback)

  • Feb 23: Chicago Journalism Town Hall (broadcast or attend)

  • March: Women in media panel, faultlines panel

  • NABJ- talk with Michigan group

  • Newsroom tour (WBEZ, NBC, Tribune--reach out to Ben Meyerson)

  • Publicnewsroom (every Thursday night)

  • Ask sharon bloyd peshkin for magazine contacts

  • Final event of year: networking event

SOC program participation

• • Involvement fair- February 18 and 19, 3:30-6:30

  • Manifest

Ask members to volunteer time

• Managing social media

• Designing posters

Ask Justin to be treasurer, replacement for Ignacio

• Training with Ignacio

• Process for budget and requests 

• To do’s:

1. Forte-do 3 social media posts, poll for meeting day, post about involvement fair, poster for involvement fair, XEROX request- poster and business cards, draft a welcome back email and send out after instagram poll (12pm tomorrow), email ben myerson about newsroom tour

2. Greene- Ask sharon bloyd peshkin for magazine contacts, make another garland, national application, visit classes for SPJ

3. Devereaux-Make more buttons, make flyers (who are we/what is SPJ)

4. Calderon- Need to make sure finances are all in order
